A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the previous year. This project was closely associated with his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated speed, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised ongoing questions over operational security.
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
