PSG has now claimed the season-opening trophy on fourteen separate occasions.
Paris Saint-Germain required a dramatic equaliser followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to overcome Marseille in the Gulf and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions title.
The European champions seemed to be sailing towards a straightforward win in the match featuring the Ligue 1 champions and the French Cup holders after the French winger opened the net early on.
Yet, the southern French side struck two times late to take a shock advantage. First, the English forward converted from the penalty spot, before the defender unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.
In a breathtaking twist of fortune, Goncalo Ramos snatched a crucial leveler in the final seconds to send the match into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then stood as the hero, saving decisive attempts from O'Riley and Traore.
In the shootout, Ramos, the midfielder, the full-back, and Desire Doue all converted with composure for PSG to complete a 4-1 shootout victory.
Now 14-time winners PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now lifted this trophy for the 12th time in the last 13 seasons.
