Patients Coming Off Slimming Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People purchasing such treatments must be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the medication explain a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural management.
